Description
PawPaw Militia in St. Joseph, Civil War, 1864. b/w. PawPaw militia refers to men enrolled in the Missouri State Militia, who were charged with keeping the local peace in Buchanan, Clay, & Platte Counties. They had effectively stopped the Jayhawker raids into this part of Missouri. However, they were made up of disloyal soldiers, men who were former bushwackers or Confederates returned from fighting. There was a move to mount an offensive against the Union Troops in Northwest Missouri by these men, to establish a Northwest Confederacy. The movement was quashed before it began.
This photo shows the militia formed in a dirt street in front of G.W. Brown's Stoves & Tinware Shop. The are in uniform and formed in four lines, with what appears more like wooden poles than rifles. Spectators including children line either side of street. Handwritten on back: "PawPaw Militia in St. Joseph." (Same as 94.1H.112).
