Pearl Brewing Company Letter to Employees Announcing Plant Closing, 1975. Letter from E.L. Birdsong, President, Pearl Brewing Company to Employees, dated Feb. 7, 1975.
"Dear Pearl Employee:
Pearl Brewing Company has been a part of the St. Joseph community since 1961, and has enjoyed the support of loyal employees such as yourself.
The decision to close the St. Joseph brewery was not made in haste. But it became apparent to us that we simply cannot produce a barrel of beer in the St. Joseph plant at a cost per barrel competitive with the large national breweries. It is absolutely essential for the local or regional brewer to be competitive in the cost of production today.
Closing of the brewery is a necessity for us from the standpoint of sound business operations and survival as a regional brewer.
Pearl is phasing out the operation over a year's time which will provide a period of transition and give our employees an opportunity to make the adjustment. Pearl is undertaking a program to assist you and your family as much as we possibly can during this period of readjustment. We will be as fair and equitable as we can in helping you to make the necessary transition precipitated by the brewery's closing.
Let me extend to you my personal thanks for your loyalty and service to Pearl.
Best of luck to you and your family.
Sincerely
E. L. Birdsong
President
