Phase II Archaeological Testing, Route I-229, Andrew & Buchanan Counties ,February, 1984. by Missouri Highway and Transportation Department. Circled among the sites listed is 23AN56.
Phase II cultural resources testing program of the proposed right-of-way and easements required for portions of Highway Project No. 1-I-229-26, Andrew and Buchanan Counties, Missouri, encompassed an examination of ten prehistoric sites and six historic period loci. All will be impacted to some degree by the construction of I-229.
The data gleaned from historic documentation, personal communications and on-site survey and testing demonstrated that prehistoric sites. 23AN47, 48, 50, 51, 53, 57, 58 and historic loci 23An49, 53, 54,56,60, and 97 do not meet the criteria of eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
Prehistoric site 23AN56 is considered to meet the National Register criteria of eligibility. Therefore, a Phase III data recovery program is recommended since the site cannot be avoided and will be destroyed by the road cut.
