Scope and Content

Philips Family History Notebook, 1746-1928. Genealogy of the Philips Family in America. Notebook compiled by the daughter of Rev. William Philips and Martha Hook Philips. The Rev. came to St. Joseph as rector for the Christ Episcopal church in 1869. His daughter Frances married into the Thomas Conrad family. Philips converted to Catholicism in 1871, thus Frances, a young girl in 1871, was the only child raised in this faith. Martha, originally a devout Methodist, did not convert until several years after the death of her husband. Philips taught in Catholic Colleges in areas away from St. Joseph and visited his family in the summer. Of 15 children, only five lived to adulthood, several growing up in St. Joseph. The Philips line is traced back to Thomas Philips in Manchester England. Included are: William Philips Final Illness & Obituary from newspaper. Martha Philips Obituary, Photo as elderly woman and her cottage. Philips Tombstone in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Philips was first interred in Calvary Cemetery. William Philips proposal letter to Martha Hook (original & transcription) List of the 15 Philips children, births, deaths. Thomas Hook Philips' Autobiography, oldest son, his photo, and obituary of his wife, who died in childbirth and his obituary in 1928. Biographies of all the other surviving children, Mary Isabelle, John William, Martha Mirriam, Francis Maria with photos of Frances at age 4 and 8. Biographies of the grandchildren of William and Martha Philips. List of the great-grandchildren of William and Martha Philips.
