This label is included in the accession book and it is noted that this was what was on display when the doll was exhibit:
A northern officer was wounded and taken prisoner in the siege of Richmond. He was taken to the home of a compassionate Southern woman and carefully nursed by her and her beautiful daughter. He fell in love with the daughter and on his recovery begged her to marry him when the war was over. She gently refused to give him an answer until the day he left Richmond as an exchange prisoner. On that day, when he begged for an answer, the young lady gave him a small box and begged him not to open it till he reached the Northern line. "This box contains my answer" she said. The young officer departed carrying the box. On opening it after he was once more among his friends he found the box contained a small doll dressed in full bridal costume, and pinned to the doll were these words: "This is the only Dixie bride you will ever have". This doll is wearing a copy of the wedding dress of that Virginia Belle.
