Description

301-303 S 6th - St Charles Hotel / St Charles House The landmark calibre St. Charles Hotel was opened in 1880 and continuously operated under the same name. The west facade with a Colonial Revival design was added in 1901. It is dominated by two projecting square bays flanking a recessed entry surmounted by a fanlight. Please see the attachment which gives an 1889 view of the St. Charles. Since this time the Mansard roof of the original design has been removed. However, the peaked lintels etched with curvilinear motifs from this period remain intact on the north facade. A contemporary history said that large additions (35 rooms plus) were made to the original building at that time. However, there was no hotel by this site name or on this site the years preceding 1880 in the City Directories and a 1910 description listed only a total of 45 rooms, so the building referred to was probably the boarding house of Mary E. Dunoan on the southeast corner of Fifth and Charles, listed in the City Directory as early as 1872 and through the 1870's. In 1880, the hotel was originally named the St Charles House Between 1880 and 1937, the hotel was renamed the St Charles Hotel. During a 5 year period from 1937-1941, the St. Charles Hotel was renamed as HOTEL MILNER. Why it changed names for a brief period in late 1930's is unknown After 1941, it was was renamed once again as the St. Charles Hotel. Even though it was closed, the St Charles Hotel was the last historic downtown hotel still standing in 2010 Some scenes in the Paper Moon movie were filmed here in the 1970's. The hotel sat closed and empty for many years. After sitting empty for many years, the hotel was sold & torn down in 2010. The ACME Vending Company currently occupies that address..
