Description

When the Leader Department Store moved to it's new location at 602 Francis, the S.S.Kresge & Woolworth dime stores occupied this corner of Felix. Kresge & Woolworth were often referred to as the "dime stores" or "5 and 10 cent stores" because they had many items that could be purchased for 5 or 10 cents. Kresge's was the most popular of the dime stores as it was the largest. It had a great lunch counter with fabulous 15 cent limeades and you could keep the tall dark green glass. My grandmother must have had 50 of those glasses. Since Kresge's was on the corner, it was also easier to enter and exit via the side door on the 6th Street side. When East Hills Shopping Center on the Belt Highway became the retail center of St. Joseph, Kresge's and Woolworth's moved there. The buildings fell into disrepair and were replaced by a parking lot.
