These are some great photos of the 1960 downtown fire
On December 31,1960 smoke was discovered coming out of the bowling alley's roof located above Eshelman's Music
The fire damaged Eshelman's, Junction Shoe Repair, a bowling alley, Rockford Furniture, Smith Insurance and Herman's Drug store
A large crane was brought in to aid in removing upper leval material
Check out the old fashioned hard rubber wheels on the crane's trailer
A giant bowling pin sign was located on the corner edge of Herman's Drug store
The bowling ally was on the 2nd floor of the brick structure just north of Eshelmans
The bowling alley had old wooden floors and did not have automatic pin setters, they hired kids to set the pins manually
I worked there one night setting pins for 10 cents a game, it was pretty dangerous
