Description

A Pictorial History of the American Indian first appeared in 1956 and written by Oliver La Farge. This edition was revised by Alvin M Joseph, Jr. and copyrighted in 1974. It is comprehensive, authoritative and a thoroughly absorbing history of the Indians of North America from the time of the discovery of this continent up to the present. Included are famous chiefs, principal tribes and Indian nations, the wars and alliances, and the desperate struggle to preserve a way of life in the face of the inevitable westward movement of the European settlers. Here is an examination in depth of the customs, religions, culture and social organization of all the great tribes of the Southeast, the Northeast, the Northwest and the West . Described are Indian war activities, agriculture, hunting, dances, sports, marriage customs, the role of women in tribal councils, wampum, arts, crafts, dwelling places, and clothing. Practices changed with the coming of the white man, the horse, the gold rush, and government regulations. Finally we see the Indians as they are today, their problems and their hopes for the future. Also included is an index. This book is from the Don Reynolds library. 288/Hardbound/Illustrations/Photographs
