Original catalogued as Japanese. Accession book does not indicate ethnography. Research shows that both China and Japan were created black and gold lacquer plates around the same time. However, most of the Japanese plates/platters feature botanical/landscape scenes where the Chinese items feature human scenes. The Japanese plates/platters that do depict people are stylized slightly different.
