Platte Purchase Marker, Installed at Wyeth-Tootle Mansion Color Photo, c. 1990. color. Two ;young women examining the marker at the Wyeth-Tootle Mansion The mansion is owned by the City of St. Joseph and operated by the St. Joseph Museum. Previously, beginning in 1948, the mansion was home to the St. Joseph Museum. The marker is on the northwest corner of the mansion near the house. The marker was created for the centennial of the Purchase in 1937. The marker has a raised outline of the area that comprised the Purchase with counties identified and St. Joseph specifically marked. Text of marker: "Platte Purchase 1837-1937 Sixteen Years after the admission of Missouri to the Union this territory now comprising six counties was purchased from the Sax, Fox, and Ioway Indians. Negotiations for the United States were conducted by William Clark, Governor of Indian Territory.
