Newspaper photos: At midnight firemen found the building too smoke filled to force more than a mere entry. Tons of water could not check the flames
As the blaze moved into the northwest part of the building at 3 a.m. the heavy windows proved an obstacle to firemen's efforts.
Police captain Croy Keller watches over a fireman over-come by smoke.
Thousands of spectators gathered, many remaining all night. This was the scene at 1 a.m. Police, using the traffic safety car's loud-speaker, kept onlookers from crowding the fireman.
The smoke reached its greatest density about 3 a.m.. The rising smoke reflected light from downtown neon signs, giving the appearance over the city that the flames were reaching high into the sky.
The faces of these firemen show that they had been working hard. Coats were ice coated.
For those who could not leave the hose lines, steaming cups of coffee were brought outside and served to the hard fighting firemen.
There were many grotesque scenes as show windows broke and manikins fell into the street. Hose lines took on odd appearances as water falling back from the burning building froze, glazing every object.
