Scope and Content
Timely Observation Henry A. Averback and Henry Guettel Story, 1938. He was one of the founders of the Palace Clothing Company parent organization of the Plymouth Clothing Company of St. Joseph, MO. and the Palace Clothing Company of Kansas City, Topeka, Emporia and Lawrence.
The story was the start of two boys in the year 1888. The two boys were Henry Averback and Henry Guettel. The two boys living in Chicago wanted to leave the wholesale houses where they worked and go into business for themselves. They started west to look over some ground, but for some reason they stopped at Topeka and decided that Topeka was far enough west.
Every day they took clothing out into the countryside catching farmers and farmhands during the noon hour. On evenings their ware was displayed in small town hotels.
In 1894 they opened a store in Kansas City and shortly after the turn of the century a store in St. Joseph MO. They wanted to call the store in St. Joseph Palace, but did not because Nate Block had a store at that time which bore the name of Palace so the store became the Plymouth.
