Political Cartoons in the 1848 Election Campaign is part of a series of publications of the Smithsonian Institution--this one being one of the studies in history and technology--number 14. This study discusses nine of the cartoons issued during the election of 1848 and their interrelationship with the personalities and issues of the campaign. These cartoons add a further dimension to the history of the election between Martin Van Buren, Henry Clay, Horace Greeley and their parties. These parties were the Democrats, Whigs, and the Free Soilders.
