Description

Pony Express--Commemoration, Stables and Museum, in Missouri Historical Review, 1950. Article by Floyd C. Shoemaker, pp. 343-365 describing the April 3,1950 commemoration celebration in St. Joseph, Missouri, which he attended. He also describes the efforts to preserve the Pony Express Stables on Penn Street citing Barlett Boder's history published in the Spring, 1950 issue of Museum Graphics and describing the original stables and its later modifications. Restoration of the stables was being undertaken by the Goetz Pony Express Foundation. One difficulty for researchers was finding a photograph of the original stables. However, by serendipity, a news clipping originally owned by Mary Alicia Owen, was donated among other clippings, to Bartlett Boder by one of Ms. Owen's descendants. That news clipping contained an illustration made from an 1858 photograph of the Stables. Mr. Shoemaker recounts the assistance the State Historical Society made it locating the entire issue of that St. Joseph newspaper account with photograph of the original building. He reprints the news account in this article. He also recounts the successive uses and disuse of the Stables to present day. There are photos of the Stables in 1950, a drawing of the Patee House, The St. Joseph Transfer Company Stables. Other articles in this issue of the Historical Review are: Birth of Kansas City's Pioneer Church by Rev. James J. Schlafly Professional, Religious, and Social Aspects of St. Louis Life 1804-1816. Civil War Letters of Col. Bazel F. Lazear, Part II Missouri History Note Found in Textbooks. includes: "When a Missourian Rassled Abe Lincoln 'Bob Ford and Creede, Colorado" Did "That Dirty Little Coward" Shoot Mr. Howard?" 110/Softbound/Illustrations/Photographs.
