Pony Express Commemorative Medallic Postal Cover #46, 1977. "The Pony Express - Great Moments in American History Series" produced by Westport Collectors Society, Norwalk, Conneticut.. Includes the cover with medallion insert, shipping envelope, letter to Don Reynolds at St. Joseph Museum thanking him for his assistance, and photocopy of the descriptive insert inside the envelope cover. Cover has four Pony Express Centennial 4¢ stamps canceled in St. Joseph on April 3, 1977.
Insert describes the Pony Rider stamp as being designed by Stanley W. Galli of Kenfield, CA, who had designed 14 other stamps. Osborne Coinage Company, a mint, produced the commemorative medal.
A = Letter Cover: A circle has been cut from envelope making medal obvious. Four Pony Express Centennial 4¢ stamps canceled in St. Joseph on April 3, 1977. "St. Joseph, Missouri" printed above the medal and "The Pony Express April 3, 1860 below the medal. blue, 10 7/8" x 4¼"
--Medal: Front shows Pony Rider on front with "A New Epic In the Winning of the West" around edge. Back: "The Pony Express, Issue No. 46, Saint Joseph, Missouri, Must Be Expert Riders Willing to Risk Death"
--Backside: "The U.S. stamp used on this cover is the 4¢ Pony Express Rider stamp of 1960." and "This is one in a series of Medallic Postal Covers, combining historic U.S. stamps with limited edition medals, postmarked on a date of historic significance."
B = Padded shipping envelope, blue. Addressed to Don Reynolds, St. Joseph Museum, postmarked May 10, ''77. 11¾" x 6"
C = Letter from Westport Collection Society to Don Reynolds accompanying the cover and thanking him for his assistance in creating the descriptive brochure. 8½" x 11"
D = Photocopy of descriptive brochure inside cover and copy of the supposed ad for Pony Riders in a San Francisco paper calling for "orphans preferred".Lexicon
