Scope and Content

Pony Express First Rider Controversy in St. Joseph New-Press, 1960. "Even Library of Congress Gives Up on 1st Rider". News story about the dispute on the identity of the first Pony Express Rider out of St. Joseph. An aide to Congressman from Missouri, William Hull, went to Library of Congress to research records there. The controversy is between Johnny Fry and Billy Richardson or perhaps, Alex Carlyle. Charles Cliff, a Rider from St. Joseph had said it was Fry as did a news clipping dated April 3, 1860. Louise Platt Hauck had referred to a Weekly West article, dated April 7, 1860 naming Richardson. Robert Young of South St. Joseph claimed Fry had won a lottery to be the first rider but had an accident the day before and Richardson took his place.
