News Clippings most probably from an old scrapbook in the possession of Don Reynolds that he dismantled and saved certain St. Joseph-related articles. Clippings were fragile & crumbling. Photocopies made of the articles and compiled into a notebook. 09.3.559. 1. George Gray's Latest Mural to be Unveiled Here, c. 1938 News Photo of Civil War Mural installed at Hotel Robidoux that features M. Jeff Thompson, the Missouri Swamp Fox of St. Joseph, Mo. Legend: The Missouri Swamp Fox-Brigadier General M. Jeff Thompson of St. Joseph. Most colorful Confederate Commander in the West leads a charge to recapture a gun near Fredericktown, Missouri, Oct. 21, 1861, during one of his numerous raids into the state where he seized vast stores of supplies and captured many prisoners. Caption: The original mural of the above Civil War scene, drawn by George Gray, Hotel Robidoux artist, will be unveiled at a dinner and Army day celebration ...by the chapter of the Reserve Officer's Association. The mural depicts Thompson, former mayor of St. Joseph Gen. Thompson came to St. Joseph in 1846. In the fall of 1852 he started a grocery store and later served in various positions with the St. Joseph & Grand Island railroad. and St. Joseph & Topeka railroads, having been in charge of construction of the Western division of the St. Joseph & Grand Island railroad. In 1858 he was city engineer and was elected mayor of the city in 1859. He was taken prisoner following the Civil War, but was soon released. His health failing, returned to St. Joseph and died at the Pacific House Sept. 5, 1876. He was buried in Mt. Mora Cemetery. 2. Reception for Mr. (Grant) Wood, undated, News photo and story announcing an informal reception for artist Grant Wood held by the St. Joseph Art League, held in the art room of City Hall. Wood also was to give a lecture in the Runcie Club's town hall in the auditorium of Junior College, 10th & Edmond Streets, for season ticket holders. Grant was to use stereoptican views in his talk. 3. Paintings by St. Joseph Artists on Display, undated New photo of the window display at S.S. Kresge Co. store in St. Joseph Caption: This collection of paintings by St. Joseph artists is on exhibition in a display window of the S.S. Kresge Co. store as part of the local observance of American Art week, which opened Friday and will continue through Thursday. Displays by various members of the St. Joseph Chapter of the American Artists' Professional League are being shown in the windows of other stores in the downtown business district. Harrison Hartley is president of the chapter. 4. To Spend Year Painting Murals, may be Jan.8, 1950 News Photo of Gustaf Dalstrom, who created the murals in the main lobby of the U.S. Post Office, 8th & Edmond, St. Joseph, MO Photo 1: Caption: Gustaf Dalstrom, well known muralist of Chicago, is shown as he passed a moment to rest while working on the walls of the lobby of the post office at Eighth and Edmond streets he expects to begin painting the first of a series of twelve murals. The work will take a year. Photo 2: "Mind Us Watching Over Your Shoulder, Mister?" Caption: Gustaf Dalstrom, artist, never lacks spectators while he paints the first of a series of twelve murals in the lobby of the post office. In the above picture, the small group watching him paint is typical of the ever changing numbers that observe his art daily. Unaccustomed to working before spectators, he at first found their comments a trifle disconcerting but laughed good naturedly about it. He expects to complete the mural shown in another week and then start on the second one just across the lobby from the current painting. 5. A Folklore Story, Ghosts I Have Met, April 13, 1917 News story re-telling a story by Myra Stallard, the first of six, about southern soldiers fate. The Ghosts were stories told to Mrs. H.A. Owen by Madame Josephine Bonaparte Singelton....one about a haunted house on Convent Hill; another about a haunted house in the north end, and the Lavendar Lady who haunts Mt. Mora Cemtery. 7. City Worthwhile Poem, Jan. 24, 1914. Reprint of poem by C. N. Van Pelt. 8. Poems about Missouri & St. Joseph, 1923 --"Old Iron State--Missouri" A Centennial Ode by J. "Happy New Year" May be Forgotten Poem by Field, Oct. 7, 1944 News story and accompanying poem concerning a pamphlet donated to the Central Public Library by Mrs. John Cargill. The poem had been sent to Sam Cargill by his cousin, Louella Owen, who had written in long hand "Mr. Eugene Field, reporter on The Gazette". The poem is the "Happy New Year, the Carrier's Dream" A rhythmical Ecccentricty Respectfully dedicated to the Patrons of the St. Joseph Gazette, January 1, 1876.
