Pony Express & Other St. Joseph Historic Clippings Notebook, Re: St. Joseph Buildings. News Clippings most probably from an old scrapbook in the possession of Don Reynolds that he dismantled and saved certain St. Joseph-related articles. Clippings were fragile & crumbling. Photocopies made of the articles and compiled into a notebook. 09.3.559. Section A: St. Joseph Buildings News Clippings 1. Hotel Robidoux, news photo, 1908. Shows finished hotel with construction materials about on the street. Caption: We are prepared to take care of the people with one of the finest hotels in the west. When in St. Joseph do not fail to call and see us. 2. Fine Walnut Lumber Used in Old Hotel, c.1930. City Hotel, or Occidental, Main & Jules Streets, built in 1846...84 years before this article written. The hotel was being razed in 1930. Girders in the original hotel were oak, the beams walnut & oak, roof trussed of oak. All wood in the hotel had been hand-hewn from native trees and carved by hand. Hotel was located near the old Horton & Kerr docks at the foot of Charles Street, and in later years was patronized by plainsmen returning West & riverboat crews. A cache of old coins was found in the attic. At razing the hotel building was owned by John Wyeth. (See #7 below) 3. City 70 Years Old Tomorrow, Dec. 27, 1914 St. Joseph laid out on Dec. 28, 1844, Named March 19, 1844 by Joseph Robidoux. The story of how St. Joseph got its name was told in the St. Joseph Herald & Tribune, Dec. 28, 1864 and is repeated here. 4. As New "Plaza" Apartment Hotel Will Appear, Jan. 12, 1929 News Photo of artist's rendering of a Hotel suggested to be built at the SE corner of Civic Center. Bonds were now being sold, expecting $950,000 to be invested. The building was to have 110 apartments of 4-5 rooms and bachelor suites, with maid service, restaurant, magnificent lobby & sunrooms, roof garden & club rooms. 5. Vandals at Chapel, undated News story of break in at Corby Family's chapel on Old Amazonia Road. The Corby's had originally buried their family members there and later gave it to the Sisters of Charity, who found such possession problematic. The article talks of razing the chapel, but in 2013 the Chapel is a private family home. (See #13 below) 6. YWCA, Walter Boschen, Architect, undated News photo of artists rendering of YWCA building, 8th & Jules 7. Days of Glory Gone, undated c. 1930 News photo of razing of Occidental Hotel. see #2 above. Caption: Once a fine old hostelry, the Occidental Hotel at Main & Jules streets is being wrecked to make room for a new structure. This picture was taken while workmen were busy razing the structure. It was built in 1846. 8. School in the Good Old Days, undated News photo of the Young Ladies Institute. Female students on front porch and 2nd story balcony of elaborate residence at 503 Antoine. Caption: This early picture of the Young Ladies' Institute, more familiarly known as "Doctor Martin's School"...This 96 year old structure...flourished for 25 years under the supervision of its founder, Rev. Charles Martin, M.C....the doctor in the center wearing the high silk hat.. The little boys at the ...right...could be .attended grade school or kindergarten there (such as) Hal Y. Lemon, retired vice president, National Bank of Detroit; John G. Parkinson, attorney; J.J. Tootle, vice president, Tootle Dry Goods Co. or his brother...Milton Tootle, Jr..... 9. Two Houses Approaching Century Mark Call Attention to History of Two Families, March 26, 1950 News photos and stories concerning Homes of James E. Cox grand home at nw corner 15th & Francis Street & that of his wife's grandfather, Russell H. Wrinkle, 417 S. Ninth Street (Could be 317). Winkle's home, a small house. James E. Cox was the president of Sun Manufacturing Co. His grandfather, William T. Harris (created Harris addition), had built the Francis Street home. It was originally an octagon house. 10. Bronze Animals Bought by Man Who Became a Fantastic Slayer Have Stood Guard at His Old Home 71 years., July 15, 1951 News photo and story about stone lions & deer that guarded the entrance to a home at 18th & Francis Streets. Purchased in 1880, the present owner, Mrs. Eva Pemberton was having them restored and moved to her back garden. She relates that school children on their way to and from Garfield school would stop to "pet" the animals. The animals were originally purchased by the then owner of the home Dr. Samuel Richmond who on June 18, 1886 walked into the office of the Daily Herald and shot the newspaper manager, Col. James W. Strong. Richmond was committed to State Hospital No. 2 but escaped to Illinois and was never brought back to the city to stand trial. He died in California at age 95. His family however continued to live in the Francis Street home up to about 1950. 11. 100-Year-Old House is Still in Possession of Original Builders, c. 1950 News photo of Mrs. & Mrs. J.W. Waller and their home on city Highway 71, four miles south of St. Joseph. John Register, Mrs. Waller's great grandfather pre-empted the farm c. 1850 and built a one-room house, that has since been expanded three times. Some of the original acreage is Register or Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. 12 ...Civic Center as It Looks Today, July 5, 1924 News Photo of Smith Park and area cleared for Civic Center (City Hall). Photo shows graded landscape and 1920's vehicles. Some of caption & photo cut off on left. Caption: ...and on the south side of Jules street. Smith park is in the center and at the right the cleared area for the Civic Center is shown as far west as the alley in back of the Knights of Columbus building. The effect today, with the present ground cleared, gives the city hall a setting of having sufficient room. The crowded appearance that was formerly noticeable has been eradicated from the picture and the Civic Center plan is daily taking form and becoming visible. Every citizen of St. Joseph will find pleasure in watching the progress of beautification of the area when the landscape work is started. 13. Corby Memorial Chapel was Erected Fifty Years Ago, July 5, 1924 News Photo of Chapel on Old Amazonia Road. Caption: Edifice built in 1874 in memory of John Corby who died in 1870. The building is in a remarkable state of preservation and a service was conducted there last Thursday morning. (See #5 above) 14. Frederick Avenue Has Marked Growth, Jun 30, 1929 News photos of businesses along Frederick Avenue. Caption: The rapid development of Frederick avenue as a business center is illustrated in the pictures above. All of these buildings have been constructied this year. The Wonstop station of the Pendleton-Brown Company is shown at the left in the top row. In the center top row is the Lehr Construction Company building. At the right on the top row is the Casper Tire Company building. The Foster-Hall Tire Company building is at the left bottom. Beckley Brothers service station is in the center of the bottom row.
