Pony Express Rides Again, Sacramento Union News Article, June 18, 1991. News story with news photos of Pony Rider on rerun. "Pony Express Arrives, 10-day journey finishes one minute early." (pg. A3)
On the front page is a news photo of a Pony Express rider and of a crowd gathering in Old Sacramento to watch Steve Woo of Diamond Springs end the annual Pony Express ride.
Pony express rider Steve Woo, the last of some 400 riders who galloped through eight states in 10 days to once again deliver the mail by horse, arrived in Old Sacramento a minute ahead of schedule Monday. His part of the trip was along the American River Parkway bike trail. Following tradition in this 131st anniversary of the Pony Express, Mr. Woo jumped on Mr. Truebar, and 18 year-old quarter horse, and had the honor of riding the final leg into town.. His horse came to a stop in front of the Pony Express statue. This ended the 1,966-mile journey that began in St. Joseph, Missouri. Forty-three riders carried the mail in relays. The riders carried 840 pieces of mail.
This was the 19th annual run. The express began in 1860 and ended in mid-1861, when competition from the transcontinental telegraph killed the service.
It never made money, but more than 25,000 pieces of mail were delivered to news-hungry California, which had a population of about 300,000. The rate was $5 a letter.Lexicon
