St. Joseph's Pony Express Centennial souvenir mail was delivered to the post office in San Francisco yesterday.
Jack Noland, president of the Western Historical Society reached the city hall on a borrowed horse after making the final run from Sacramento to San Francisco by truck. He was accompanied by two loyal followers who tried earlier in the week to carry out a pony ride of almost 800 miles.
Mayor George Christopher gave a brief welcome to the lone rider as he turned over his pouch containing 2,500 letters to Postmaster Joseph Fixa. The San Francisco post office plans a special cancellation of the letters which will then be sent back to St. Joseph by regular mail
The special souvenir letters purchased by Midland Empire residents are expected to arrive by mail late this week. Museum Director Roy E. Coy said that those who desired the souvenir covers but were unable to order them before the centennial will be able to purchase them from the Museum next week.
