Seventy riders will leave here in a caravan at approximately 2 p.m. Sunday from the Pony Express stables. They hope to reach Salt Lake City by the evening of April 9. They will meet a contingent of riders from Sacramento, CA exchange mail and return home.
The plan is to make an overnight stop at Horton, KA, Sunday. Other stops are Ayr. NE, Tuesday night; Ogalala, NE, Wednesday night; Guernsey. WY, Thursday night; Green River WY, Saturday, Muddy Gap, WY, Friday night; and Salt Lake City Sunday.
Making the trip will be members of the MO-Kan Saddle Club and representatives of other saddle clubs in Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas. Each rider will cover a mile stretch and pass the mail pouch on to the next rider. After finishing the mile run the horse will be loaded into a trailer and carted down the highway to the start of his next mile run. Each rider and horse will cover three one-mile stints daily.
In the caravan will be 70 riders and officials, and 40 vehicles.
They will carry their own equipment, including a portable field stove, a portable generator, their own food and feed for their horses. Lee Shifflet will be trail boss.Lexicon
