Description

Postal History Museum, Exhibit on Pony Express, Photos (3), 1960. b/w. Three promotional photos published by the Postal History Museum upon its opening, Feb. 23, 1960. Subjects of exhibits include Mail Sorting Desks, Stage Coach mail service, and the Pony Express as below: 94.1H.202 = Photo of woman at mail sorting desk. Legend: " Museum Mail Sorting. One of the many interesting displays in the Post Office Department's new Postal History Museum, located at the Department's main building at Twelfth and Pennsylvania Avenue N.W. in the Nation's Capital is this Colonial Postmaster's desk. Miss Gayle Tannen, a Post Office secretary, shows how the desk was used for sorting mail into pigeonholes--essentially the same kind of "peek and poke" mail sorting still used in many post offices, but generally being supplanted by machine sorting. 94.1H.203 = Stage Coach being examined by two women. Legend: "Old Versus New--Tow Post Office Department employees--Mrs. Betty Dalgleigh (l) and Gayle Tannen--inspect a model of a mail coach similar to those used in the last century. In the background, in sharp contrast, is a display on the Post Office Department's historic Missle Mail Experiment in 1959." 94.1H.204 = Pony Express Mail Exhibit Legend: "Glamour of the Pony Express--the Post Office Department's new Postal History Museum in Washington, D.C. has, as one of its highlights, a display on the famous Pony Express, which began April 3, 1860 between St. Joseph, Missouri and Sacramento, California. Miss Gayle Tannen is placing a letter in one of the mail containers or "cantinas" where were part of a "mochila", a kind of leather cover which fitted over the saddle of the Pony Express riders. As shown in this model, the cantinas--two on each side--were locked for mail safety." Original digital scan located on History CD 04
