A picture postcard with a photo on the front and a message on the back. Undated. Vol 1 P. 237E
The photo is of a carved wooden figure featuring exaggerated facial features, pointing with its hand, and wearing a crown decorated with small puffs; the figure appears to be emerging from a barrel situated on a grassy surface.
The message explains the photo "Thlinget Indian" image used in early wars. This image was fastened to a canoe's bow, leading a fleet, with swansdown placed atop. As the canoe advanced, the swans down fell over the paddlers, symbolizing success. The arm of the image extended forward, pointing the way. During a potlatch in Sitka in 1904, this image was placed on a lead canoe for an invitation to Chilcot and Killisnoo. Anciently fastened by nails, swansdown in this ceremony represented peace, akin to a dove."
The explanation is written over the original message: "Please release Postals if not interested."Subject
