1 BOX OF 3/RESTORED/FROM PLATTE CO MO/SEE SHIPPEE NOTES ATTACHED TO EACH/NO SITE PROVENIENCE
Original storage of pots is confusing - one box had the 2056 accession number on the box itself, but was an empty box with only a note that said "From Platte County, Missouri. Restored by Smithsonian Institution" inside. Another box had no identification on it but had a note inside that had two accession numbers on it:
99.27.2190
99.27.2056
and read "water bottle, Platte Co. Steed Kisker Pot. Dug by LS Ward in 1900"
The artifact inside this second box is photographed here. The bottom of the artifact reads "#1343. Oct 5, 1934.Mound south at Avondale." Inside the vase was a note that reads "The finding of this pottery caused the change in J. Mett Shippee who was a "pot hunter" to that of "learning archaeologist". He dug this up with a shovel. It was perfect and he cut the top off with his spade. It was a costly lesson"
There is no clear connection with 99.27.2190
No third pot or reference to pot found.
The Steed Kisker site is 23PL13, which is referenced by the note. Avondale Mounds is 23CL23.
**Another note - a black pot was found in another unlabeled box. The black pot has a note written on it that says:
This sherd from Albert Hansen Collection and the sherds joining it to the left, from J.M. Shippee collection were united to restore this vessel. The sherds were dug from a mound in Platte Co. Mo. about 1900 by L.S. Ward.
In other areas on the reconstructed pot is written "Aztec Platte", "Ward's Cat No. 2489, Platte Co." and "Shippee - 23PL6"
It is assumed that THIS pot matches the note that was written about the water bottle.
The bottom of the pot reads 23PL00 (does not seem to be a real archaeological site)
