Description
Pottowattomie Indians at Mouth of Blacksnake Creek, Kurz Sketches Painting for 1848. Photos (5). b/w. Five copies both 8 x 10 and 5 x 7 of the painting created by Rudolph F. Kurz, Swiss artist, who resided in St. Joseph for about 18 months in 1848-49. His object was to sketch the Native Americans. He made many sketches and hoped to create finished works once back in Switzerland. He was only able to complete this one and another of brave standing in wooded area at Blacksnake Creek. (see 93.1H.204)
The finished painting shows five Native Americans leaning on boulder. Three are seen from their backs as they look out on the confluence with the Missouri River, looking west. A female holding a baby is seated at the base of the boulder with dog at her feet. Another male, leaning on rock has his face turned forward.
Based on Kurz journal the sketches may have been made Aug. 9, 1949. SJM has in its collection a print of this painting that at one time hung in the Office of the Mayor of St. Joseph.
