Reporting on an article in the national magazine of Presbyterian Church about the establishment of Faith Mission, located in the packing house district of the city.
The magazine reported that mission was thought to be needed due to the "distress and sin"; "saloons were killing the by the score"; "every week several of them were found in the weeds back of these places dead". Also that in one week 10 children living in tents there had died and were buried in holes in the ground, not in cemetery:
The City Coroner disputed the above, reporting that only 3 people had died in 3 years in that area, one found dead behind a saloon, and two from excessive drinking. Only one child was known to have died and been buried outside of a cemetery.
The missionary confirmed the coroner and mentioned that the area was struggling with the influx of some many people in a short period of time.
