Description

Property Owned by Same Family Since It Was Wilderness Sold by Duncan's, Dr. Francis Smith Home, 11th & Messanie is a news article dated December 5,1954 concerning the sale of the mansion at this address built in 1891. The house was built by Dr. J. Francis Smith, son of Frederick William Smith who platted the townsite of St. Joseph. The land upon which the house is situated was part of Smith's Addition part of a land grant to F.W. Smith. Dr. Smith, a bachelor, made this the home for his mother, and sister's family, Mrs. John Duncan, whose descendants held the property until this sale in 1954 to George D. Dunlap. In 2009 a replacement home stands, the home of Dr. Debra and Fred Weems. Valuable pictures and papers from the house were donated to the St. Joseph Museum. A dozen documents with Joseph Robidoux's signature were given to the Historic Homes Foundation. 1/News clipping
