Description

The Railway Postal Service, Originated by William A. Davis of St. Joseph, Missouri, Inaugurated on the Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad in 1862. This book consists of newspaper or magazine clippings pasted in a journal book. Most of the book is blank pages. The articles tell of William A. Davis' role in originating the first mail car inaugurated on the Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad in 1862. He had served as postmaster in St. Joseph. Articles tell of his life and career. Last part is corroborating evidence of extracts from the "History of the Railway Mail Service" prepared by the Department and letters from well know persons familiar with the origin of the post office cars. This book indicates that his role in inventing the mail car had been denied or forgotten. 22/Hardbound/Illustrations.
