Recollections of a Pioneer was written in 1912 in St. Joseph, Missouri by J.W. Gibson, at the urging of his friends and acquaintances, to preserve the memories of a period fast passing out of personal memory. He tells of his birth in Georgia, and his family's travels to their new home in the Platte Purchase. His first cattle drive with his family which took him east through Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio to Pennsylvania. His next adventure was the gold rush to California in 1848 and through 1851. The next ten years were spent driving cattle across the plains to the west, and finally taking over the farm in 1861. He then tells of the Civil War's effect on the people of the area, and his own experiences in Missouri and Arkansas until the end of the war and his return home. His story continues with the account of his journeys across the plains and his life on his farm and in St. Joseph.
