Record Ride for Pony Express: You Are There Segment, CBS News, undated. CD
CBS News TV Series: You Are There. Mock News reports narrated by Walter Cronkite, as though the CBS News organization was reporting on the event at the time it happened.
This segment highlights the record ride by Pony Express Rider, 19 year old, Bob Haslam who rode 380 miles in 36 hours, May 10-May 12, 1860. The need to do so was prompted by the Indian uprising that had burned some Express stations and killed the station managers in a broader rebellion against white incursion. The Utah militia had commandeered Express Station horses at some stations. Bob rode from Friday's Station just inside Utah Territory across the California Line east to Smith's Creek and back west, changing ponies when available.
