Resolution State of Missouri Senate regarding Pony Express One Hundred Thirtieth Anniversary, 1990.
Whereas, the period of April 3 through 13, 1990 will mark the One Hundred Thirtieth Anniversary of the first ride of the Pony Express, an event which has contributed significantly to the proud heritage of the St. Joseph community and the entire Show-Me-State; and on April 3, 1860, the first Pony Express rider left from what now comprises the Pony Express Museum in St. Joseph to embark on one of the boldest and most exciting ventures in American history, that of traveling some two thousand miles to Sacramento, California, in a race against time, the elements, and hostile Indians; and the Pony Express was conceived and operated by Missouri entrepreneurs William H. Russell, Alexander Majors, and William B. Waddell, who sought to cut in half the time it took for messages to reach California from the East and thereby secure a mail contract from the federal government; and through the Pony Express was not financially successful, the venture nevertheless proved the feasibility of the Central Overland Route to California as the most efficient mode of communication until the completion of the transcontinental telegraph, and established an important communicative link which figured largely in California's decision to remain loyal to the Union during the Civil War; and founded in 1926, the St. Joseph Museum was established to serve the educational, cultural, and recreational interests of area residents and visitors from around the world, through which endeavor it subsequently acquired the famous Pony Express stables for development into the Pony Express Museum; and the Pony Express Museum operates trough the St. Joseph Museum to preserve and interpret the historic significance of the Pony Express by displaying a wide range of exhibits which include the most comprehensive photographic exhibit of the known trail and station sites.
Now therefore, be it resolved that we, the members of the Missouri Senate, Eighty-fifth General Assembly, thereby join unanimously in commending the St. Joseph Museum Board of Directors and all the dedicated Museum employees and volunteers for their ongoing efforts toward the successful operation of the Pony Express Museum during this, the One Hundred Thirtieth Anniversary year of the Pony Express; and be it further resolved that the Secretary of the Senate be instructed to prepare a properly inscribed copy of this resolution for the Joseph Museum Board of Directors.
This resolution was offered by Senator Truman E. Wilson.
