Research Notes

Notes

This is likely a Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver. Over 200,000 of them were produced between 1860 and 1873, with roughly 127,000 being purchased by the United States government. This .44 caliber cap and ball percussion revolver was a muzzle-loader, featuring a six-shot, single-action design. It was the sidearm of choice throughout the American Civil War, purchased in large numbers by the Union and used by the Confederacy whenever it could be captured. The gun was trusted to be reliable and accurate up to a range of one hundred yards.
