95.1H.115 B: Article on Antoine by Bartlett Boder. "Is It Antoine Robidoux?
"It is quite probable that the photograph to the right of Jules C. Robidoux is hat of the failing and ill Antoine Robidoux for the additional reasons: In the 1859-1860 city directory of St. Joseph there are listed as residents, Edmond Robidoux, Felix Robidoux, Julius (Jules) C. Robidoux and the patriarch, Joseph Robidoux. As these photographs of them are generally known likenesses, the identification is beyond question. In the 1860-61 city directory there are again listed Edmond, Felix, Julius C Robidoux and their father, the venerable Joseph Robidoux, and in addition, Julius C. H. Robidoux, the young son of Julius C. Robidoux, and also the elderly Joseph E. Robidoux, often spoken of as Joseph Robidoux, Jr. or Indian Joe, whoe likeness is also generally known, and the identification is beyond question. And last but not least, the noted Antoine Robidoux. This photograph, despite the beard, shows the broad Celtic cheek bones the the known smooth-shaven likeness of Antoine when he was a young man, including the prominent Hapsburg lower lip...
General Stephen Watts Kearney was in charde of the expedition of mostly Missouri calvary troopers which first captured Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1846, and then headed westward for Southern California with Antoine Robidoux acting as interpreter and advisor to the general. Antoine's brother, Louis was already a great figure in California where he owned the huge Jurupa ranch at present day Riverside, and was, like Antoine married to a Spanish wife. Among the Spanish, Antoine was know as Don Antonio Robidoux. Judge Stephen Kearny Owen of St. Joseph is a great grandson of General Kearny, his mother Harriett Kearny Owen, being the daughter of Charles Kearny who first came to St. Josep in 1855 from St. Louis..."
