Robidoux Descendant, Indians Offered to Trade for Her; Wanted to Go With Them, News Article about Stollsteimer time on Santa Fe Trail, 1920
Newspaper drawing of Indians talking with daughter and mother of pioneer woman, who were Carmelte Robidoux Barada, and Amanda Robidoux Barada, her daughter who married C.F. Stollsteimer.
She remembers just after her father died in 1857 She was 6 years old. They joined the expedition organized by a St. Joseph merchant Eugene Leitensdorfer who was going to Santa Fe to trade. She remembers that the Indians wanted her to go with them. She was not afraid and wanted to go with them. The Indians offered her mother all kinds of beads and blankets and feathers to cinch the trade.
For several weeks afterward she was guarded very closely fearing an unexpected and hostile visit from the savages, with me as the object.
Antoine Robidoux, brother of Joseph Robidoux founder of St. Joseph, married Carmel Benavides, Santa Fe, NM. Having no children of their own, they adopted Carmelete, who married Isador Barada in St. Joseph, MO. The Baradas had one daughter, Amanda, who was raised by Mrs. Antoine Robidoux after her mother died. Amanda married C. F. Stollsteimer in Santa Fe, an Indian Agent. The Stollsteimers moved to Colorado.
