Description

Robidoux, Joseph, Photo of J.V.D. Patch Oil Painting, painted c. 1900. b/w. Photo of oil painting by J.V.D. Patch of Joseph Robidoux in his prime, perhaps 1850's. He is depicted in his home, seated in and armless chair in front of an office secretary desk with fringed cloth. He holds a pipe in his right hand, his legs crossed at the knee. The open kitchen fireplace is behind him on right. An empty stuffed rocker sits in front of him to the left. Typed on back of photo: "Joseph Robidoux III, Founder of St. Joseph, Mo. From painting by J.V.D. Patch in the St. Joseph Museum, St. Joseph, Mo. From Memorial to the Robidoux Brothers, book by Orral Messmore Robidoux, p. 277 " By Joel V. D. Patch, artist, who saw the propriety of placing a painting of Joseph Robidoux, founder, in the lobby of the hostelry, Robidoux Hotel. It is a study of Joseph Robidoux, represented as seated before an old-fashioned fire place, clad in the familiar butternut clothes of the time. His left leg is crossed over the other, and his left hand rests on the uppermost knee. He holds a pape in his right hand. He appears to have turned from a perusal of a bundle of papers on a small table to the cheery comfort of the open fire, over which is suspended from a crane an old-fashioned iron pot. The andirons and a potato pot at the edge of the hearth, and a bellows were reproduced from old models. A pair of fire tongs was painted from memory. When J.V.D. Patch's work was finished he discovered a pair of tongs that were the exact likeness of those that he represented. Before Robidoux rests a small old-fashioned rocking chair with red tufted seat and back which Robidoux had brought up the river for his wife, Angelique. In the background is a small, flat topped stand with a case of shelves and drawers resting on top. This rock, stand and shelves owned by Robidoux are in the possession of his grandchildren.." There are two items marked with this number. One is an 8 x 10 photo identical to 95.1H.105. The other is a small photo of the painting in its frame. Original digital scan located on History CD 04
