Description

Robidoux, Joseph, Tombstone Photo, c. 1914. b/w. Photo of large rectangular stone with stone cross atop. Robidoux was reburied at this location after the old cemetery was destroyed. Tombstone erected in 1914 by grandson Louis Robidoux. Inscription: "Joseph Robidoux Founder of St. Joseph born St. Louis 1783-1868 Erected 1914 by his Grandson Louis Robidoux son of Jule C. Robidoux" From Memorial to Robidoux Brothers, a book by Orral Messmore Robidoux, p. 271-272 "The shaft is of gray granite, twelve feet high, and at the base seven feet wide and five feet thick, The body of Joseph Robidoux, together with that of his son Jules, the father of Louis, was removed August 15, 1908, from Calvary Cemetery, the old Catholic cemetery on Garfield Avenue, to Mount Olivet, the new cemetery on Lovers Lane. It was reported at the time that the body of Joseph Robidoux could not be located as to some contention of not finding a mettalic casket after forty years--1868-1908--in the ground; however, this is confirmed by both Louis Robidoux and his wife, who were present when the graves were opened. The remains of Joseph, the father; Julius, the son; Napoleon, the grandson, as they lay side by side were exhumed. Louis recognized his brother by his prominent teeth, his father by his Roman nose and his grandfather by his having one tooth and long hair. Louis Robidoux, desired, of course, to have his relatives' graves where they could be better cared for, and before he died, February 6, 1923, it was his wish that his lot 111, block 1, in Mount Olivet Cemetery be closed against any more interment and provision made with the diocese of St. Joseph for perpetual care, in memory of Joseph Robidoux, the founder of St. Joseph, Mo."
