"The oldest son of Joseph Robidoux by his second wife, Angelique Vaudry Robidoux, was born at St. Louis, August 13, 1814. A twin sister was born at the same time but she survived only long enough to be christened Messanie. Her father, twenty-nine years later, named a street in St. Joseph in memory of her. A street in St. Joseph was likewise named for Jules, her brother. Several years ago a friendly controversary arose over that spelling of the street, many asserting that it should be spelled Jules. The question was given to the St. Joseph Historical Society by the City Council to settle. By a margin of only one vote, the society reported that the preferred spelling was Jules. Laurence Kenney, S. J. emeritus professor of history at St. Louis University added to the merriment by writing a question: "Who can say Jules Street without pronouncing it Jules street? After Joseph Robidoux sold his two-story log trading post in 1844, Jules Cesar Robidoux and Felix Robidoux, his son, bought his stock of goods and conducted a store near First & Felix streets near the steamboat wharfs. At the close of the Civil War there were many liberated slaves who were living as husband and wife under the common law practice, sometimes called Scottish marriages. Jules C. Robidoux as a justice of the peace united in legal marriage many ex-sales, some of the couples already having children. Original digital scan located on History CD 04
