Description

Runcie, Constance Fauntleroy, Founder of Runcie Club, Portrait Photo, c. 1880s. b/w. Copy of a portrait photo, bust view, of Constance Runcie. She is fairly young woman, wearing a decorated bonnet, her bodice has high collar. Runcie was the wife of James Runcie, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, who moved to St. Joseph just after the Civil War. When he died, Constance found herself in need of income. To that end she began a women's group whose members paid dues. That club has operated continuously and is still in session in 2020. Runcie is the grand-daughter of Robert Owen, who attempted to create a utopian society in New Harmony, Indiana. Original digital scan located on History CD 05
