From St. Joseph News-Press, July 4, 1976 in which this photo was re-printed
" The work crew at the Excelsior Wagon and Carriage Works owned by D. H. Schmidt, 9th & Lafayette, paused one day many years ago to pose for a photographer. The photograph, taken from east of 9th, also shows the old Electric Hotel, the brick building just north of the wagon shop. At lower left can be seen a portion of a wooden sidewalk, a necessity in the time when concrete and brick walks had not been built and rain turned paths to mud holes."
