Scope and Content

Schneider Building Razing St. Joseph News-Press, December 1,1974 Schneider Building, First YMCA, to be Razed Newspaper photo: When building is razed, the question of what is behind this sign will be answered. Some persons say the legend "St. Joseph Young Men's Christian Association is behind the metal strip. Others say it bears the wording "Ritner Business College." Newspaper photo: Typical of the elaborate ornamentation used on buildings erected before the turn of the century are insets of terra cotta, such as the one shown above. Newspaper photo: This is how the 85-year-old Schneider building appears today from the stone pillared balcony on one of the upper floors of the former American National Bank Building. Part of a carved stone capital shows at the upper left. Built by the Y.M.C.A., the structure now known as the Schneider Building was dedicated on Sept 11, 1887, The "Y" gymnasium was on the first floor. The Y had the entire second floor, which included a music hall seating about 600 persons. Newspaper photo: Craftsmanship of another day is evident in this casting which houses a combination fire and sprinkler alarm bell. Newspaper photo: The crowning glory of the building was this slate covered dome. Below the dome tera cotta insets decorated the round portion of the wall of the tower. Newspaper photo: Awaiting now the headache ball of a demolition firm, the building is in a state of neglect, with paint peeling from its carefully designed sheet metal trim, eaves and guttering. The windows, of varying shape, kept the interior of the building well-lighted.
