Scope and Content
School of Their Own, A History of Black Schools in St. Joseph and the Lucas Family, St. Joseph Museum Weekly On-line Newsletter, April 24, 2020, Issue 3.
Print-out of an article written by Gary S. Wilkinson describing the John Lucas, Sr. family as they moved to St. Joseph in the 1920s from Girard, Kansas. They settled in the north side of the city at 1113 Douglas and the children attended the all-black Lincoln Elementary School at St. Joseph Avenue & Pendleton St.
Wilkinson also tells of their 2-mile one-way trek to Bartlett High School at 18th & Angelique.
In addition, Wilkinson profiles the laws that governed separate but equal education and the change that integration brought in 1954.
He updates the reader as to the career of John Lucas, Jr. who landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and later served as the city's first black councilman. He also provides the reader with the life of Maxine Lucas who married Sherman Wilkinson, who's son, Gary, became the second person of color elected as City Councilman, later serving as Deputy Mayor.
