Second Nebraska's Campaign Against the Sioux. The 2nd Nebraska Volunteer Calvary was organized in 1862 as a response to Indian activity that began in Minnesota when Federal troops were withdrawn there and sent to the fighting in the Civil War. Nebraskans were concerned that hostile Indian activity would ensue for which they were not prepared. 9 of the 12 companies raised participated in a military campaign into the Dakota Territory under General Alfred Sully and joined General Sibley's overland troops in what became the battle at Whitestone Hills.
This book reprints the recordings of three participants: the journal of Col. Robert W. Furnas, the diary of Corporal Henry W. Pierce, and the drawings of Private George Belden.
