Shamba Letu is the story of an American girl, the author--Kate Werner, and her adventure in a communal village in Tanzania. She helped set up a cooperative nursery, run a baby clinic in her front hall, worked with the women's organization, and taught sewing. She was part of a small program called Volunteer Teachers for Africa which was started a few years before the Peace Corps began. She was there at the time of the American war in Vietnam which affected the African attitude toward America and made it hard for American volunteers to accomplish anything there, especially in the period after she left Tanzania.
