Soldier & Brave is the story of Military and Indian Affairs in the Trans-Mississippi West, Including a Guide to Historic Sites & Landmarks. The Introduction is by Ray Allen Billington. This is the period when the trapper, the explorer, and finally the settler were pushing westward into lands where the Indian had always roamed at will. The clash was inevitable and the Indian has no desire to become a farmer. Treaties were made and broken--as often by the encroaching whites as by the Indians. Raids, massacres, ambushes and pitched battles were problems of the time. The book is divided into 2 parts. Part I is a fascinating and important contribution to the knowledge and appreciation of our Western heritage. Part II is a careful listing of missions, schools, forts, trading posts, reservations and battlefields including pertinent information about each of them. This book is from the Don Reynolds collection.
