Soulard, St. Louis. This area in St. Louis embodied a bold and colorful tapestry of European immigrant life in America. From 1842 until the Cyclone of 1896, the area prospered with a community of parks, churches, breweries and shops. After the disaster, it fell on hard times and became a slum area. In the 1970's the heart of the neighborhood revived and it is now known as St. Louis' most popular venue for jazz and blues.
Its ethnic history, originally French, is German, Serbian, Czech, Bohemian, Hungarian, Irish, and Italian. Anheuser-Busch Brewery grew out of the dozens of breweries that grew up in the area to serve the residents.
