Dear Bob,
I'm afraid I have been an awful correspondent, not having thanked you for the birthday card, and then even worse not mentioning your valentine - both of which I enjoyed real much - but occasionally the routine makes extra curricular activity go slower.
The setting is quite interesting Bob, but I wish we had more opportunity to work with the patients. So much of it is handling routine affairs etc, and writing letters, requests for social history etc., and naturally since the doctors are the real specialists, they do most of the therapy with the patients. The majority of patients are Navy, Marine or Coast Guard kids who had psychotic episode, and who will be over it in a short time. They use quite a bit of shock treatment here and much of it is effective. Then there are a few psychotic merchant Marines who are more or less chronic cases, a bunch of veterans who've just recently come in from overcrowded veterans hospitals in Texas, and some drug addicts. There aren't more than 600 pts in this hospital now so we have a chance to know many of the patients and the personnel. The doctors here are for the most part swell fellows and interested in their jobs. Red Cross has a good relationship with them too - largely the result of a joint coffee hour.
As for Ft. Worth, it is a typical Western cow town. Actually there's nobody very interesting on the staff to explore the town with. A friend from St. Louis, Paul Mathews, was down last week, and we saw a bit of the most glamorous spots of Ft. Worth, but even those were pretty dismal. I sound very disheartened, but I must point out that the 4 times I was in Dallas made me think it was a pretty gay city. I shall have to give Ft. Worth more of a chance to prove itself.
By the way I saw "It's a Wonderful Life", the other night and thought it was one of the best movies I've seen in years. Been to a couple of plays including "State of the Union" and "Glass Menagerie" both of which were excellent. Occasionally I've been to the symphony (Dallas) but other than that haven't been very cultural. But they tell me that the Met is making a tour through Dallas in April, as I will try to make that.
And now, for St. Joe. How's the job for Burlington coming as of March? Probably you have things well under control. I hope you haven't had the flu as everybody else in St. Joe seems to. Mom said she and Dad had pretty bad cases. Hope your folks (notice the Texan touch) haven't suffered any ill effects.
Bailey tells me J. C. is still rolling along even if Sylvia Noyers is the only one who seems decent in Allie's eyes.
Well enuf of this rambling. Let me know when you have a chance how things are going for you, and if St. Joe is still the same. Are ya doing any more decoration jobs? Leave I forget
Happy Easter!
