Thursday Afternoon - August 5, 1943
Dear Folks,
I'm writing from the Hollywood USO. Two other fellows and I came here to get tickets (free to servicemen) to a big tent show give by Orson Welles, Joseph Colten, Rita Hayworth, and others this evening.

Well, I just barely got started on this note at the USO when we pulled out for the Warner Theatre. We got free tickets at the USO to see the movie there, "The Constant Nymph," starring Joan Fontaine, Charles Boyer, and Alexis Smith. It was a pretty good movie, and the theater was luxurious.
We're back at the Hollywood Guild Canteen now for our supper. We've got beds here for tonight, and we also slept here last night. It's almost like a private home - everything is free. In fact, it used to be a very nice private home. Many movie stars are on the board of directors. - We slept till 9:00 this morning, then arose and had breakfast here about 10:00. Then we set out for Hollywood Boulevard - we (?) have had no trouble at all hitchhiking all the time. We invariably get picked up after standing by the side of the road for a few minutes.
We shopped around in downtown Hollywood - Rubius bought a traveling bag and fountain pen, and we each had our fountain pens engraved with our name in gold ink for 25 cents. We all three got a shoe shine together this afternoon - 15 cents a shine.
I'm going to try to talk the other two guys into going to the Hollywood Bowl tonight instead of the Orson Welles show. Sir Thomas Beecham, leading British conductor, is conducting the L.A. Philharmonic there tonight.
Oh, I forgot to tell you how come we're in Hollywood and having such a wonderful, carefree time. All of us guys who arrived at Loyola from Pasadena yesterday were granted 3-day passes, before the term begins next Monday, August 9th.
We saw "60 of the Most Beautiful Girls in All the World" at Earl Carroll's Theatre-Restaurant last night.
