Context

Saturday Afternoon - August 28, 1943 Dear Folks, Mom's letter came at mail call this noon after chow. Don't worry about Duane and me not seeing each other because we are going to see each other. He called me last night, but when I went down to the phone it took so darn long to get operator 603 at Santa Ana that I guess he'd left. Well, I was again called out of class this morning (chemistry - we were having an oral quiz, which I luckily missed) and got him after about 15 minutes of dialing the Operator and waiting around for her to call back. He and another boy - Myron Meyer - have dates in L.A. for tonight. They have a room in the Biltmore Hotel for tonight, so Duane suggested I go there. The room is under the other boy's name, so all I do is ask for Myron Meyer's room. Duane said of course they wouldn't get in until late, but for me to go on up anyway. Duane said they'd probably go back to Santa Ana about 11 or 12 tomorrow, so we wouldn't see much of each other, but a least we'll see each other. One of these weekends we're both going over to see the Wenz's. You said that he may only be there a few more weeks. I think you're wrong, because I'm sure they're there for 3 or 4 months, and he's only been there about 6 weeks now. We had a showdown inspection directly after chow this afternoon. We were supposed to have all our G.I. stuff displayed on our bunks. Of course some is at the cleaners and the laundry. Inspections are certainly a big bother. We have to take our stuff out of our lockers and barracks bag, and then dump it all back in in a few minutes. Pop, you'll have to take good care of Pat for two weeks, I see. I'd like to be there to east some of those delicious breakfasts I'm sure you're going to cook. Ha! Ha! - That's a pretty big house to live in alone for two weeks. No, I didn't know Bill and Helen had another blessed event. Robert Douglas - well, they certainly know how to pick a good name - ahem! Laurie Pearson and I are going into L.A. together. We'll hitchhike over to Inglewood and then take the No. 5 Car into downtown L.A. - I certainly hope my watch is ready by now. It wasn't ready last Saturday. He is waiting around now, so I'd better hurry. So goodbye for now. Love, Bob
