Friday Evening - September 10, 1943
Dear Pop,
I haven't heard from you for some time, but I guess you're pretty busy. In fact, I haven't had hardly any mail at all since last Saturday. I had a letter from Mom yesterday, mailed from Memphis, Tennessee. I guess she'll be home by the time this letter arrives.
The Board has finally switched me to Term I of Basic Engineering. So beginning tomorrow I'll be in another section. I'll be taking beginning physics, beginning chemistry, college algebra and trig, and the usual history, geography, and English. I certainly hope I do better than I've done in Basic II. Ordinarily I would be going back into antiaircraft at Camp Roberts, California, but because I had high scores on my aptitude tests, and good grades in Jr. College, they've allowed me to remain to try and do better. Fifteen other boys who flunked out were shipped out yesterday.
We've had some celebrities here lately. For our entertainment Wednesday evening John Charles Thomas, famous baritone, sang a number of songs. I got his autograph. Boy is he ever big - he's built like most singers - just like a bull.
After physical training this afternoon we were all very surprised to see a Rolls Royce parked in the drive beside the Arts Building. We all gathered around, and talked to the chauffeur, who was English. He told us the car belonged to Barbara Hutton (of 10 cent stone fame), the American heiress. You remember she was married to a Danish Count, but got a divorce, and now is married to Cary Grant, the movie star. She was inside talking to Father Connoly, the dean here. So we all stood around and waited for here to come out. She finally came, escorted by Father Connoly. She was pretty, but thin - just like her pictures in the papers.
Today in physical training our section did mass calisthenics then played baseball the remainder of the period. I weigh about 158 stripped.
I can't think of anything more, so will stop.
Your old kid, BobCollection
